Seal of Evil on Windows 10

Getting this running was a little bit of work but it's not impossible.

Firstly, you may need to temporarily disable Windows Security's real time protection to get the installer to run. If you don't, you may get corruption issues.

Once the game is installed you may as well grab the NOCD. It's probably not essential but it does make things easier.

Next, you need to add the game's exe file as an exception in DEP (Data Execution Protection). DEP can be accessed via Control Panel > System > Advanced System Protection > Advanced > Settings button in the Performance box > Data Execution Protection tab. From there add the game's exe file. If you don't do this then Windows 10 will stop the game from even running.

Then you need to add three .dll files to the game's root directory which can all be found in 'WineD3D For Windows'. The three files you need are d3d8.dll, libwine.dll and wined3d.dll. If you don't add these three files, the game will complain that you don't have a 3d accelerator card and exit.

Finally, you need to set compatibility to Windows XP Service Pack 2 and set the game to run as administrator. If you don’t do this, the game will crash after the two intro movies play. Also, I say play, but they were just black screens for me, after that the game crashed.

Anyway, doing all of the above got the game working for me so on the off chance you've stumbled upon this post after trying to get the game working in Windows 10, I hope this helps!

The voice acting is aweful but its a gorgeous game with really nice music. The gameplay's pretty good too! I just wish we got more of these Wuxia style RPGs in English.

  1. Thank you! I got it working with the d3d8.dll and wined3d.dll, along with the NOCD (though I have the CDs the game only starts when I use the NOCD executable). I didn't need to disable Windows Security for the installation.

Your instructions here were the only ones I found anywhere that worked! I've tried to get this game working a few times over the past 10 years and always failed--but today, with your help and those files, it started perfectly! Thank you for posting this so random people on the Internet (like me) can actually play this game again!

3 Dead Consoles. Christ Almighty.

My NES, my DC and my PS3 are all dead. Yes, dead. I cannot fucking believe this. I mean the DC is forgiveable, it's 10 plus years old and been on its last legs for some time now. The NES only received its routine clean however and the PS3? The PS3 hardly gets bloody used! I've been playing Megadrive games on the fucking thing this month. This really sucks... :(

Goodbye Gaming PC

My Macbook Pro arrived on Friday, work have a deal set up with Apple that allows you to get a Macbook (and the OSX/Windows versions of Microsoft Office) at a discount. I've been wanting to downgrade for a while now and I've been quite impressed with the iPhone so I put in for one. All in all it's very impressive which is to be expected I suppose. I tried some games on it and it holds its own well enough. Not as great as my PC of course but that's OK. The plan now is to give some of the parts from my PC to my parents to speed theirs up and sell the rest. I'll probably buy an OEM version of Windows 7 at some point for the occasional bootcamp game before putting some money aside for a 46"-50" TV. Then I'll put a HTPC together to go under the telly and I'll be all set. I'm also abandoning current gen console gaming altogether. So little of what's out there interests me, a couple of old consoles, the occasional handheld and Steam all do a far be...
